"Passing characters" is the first scientific publication of the prose of Lydia Yakovlevna Ginzburg, an outstanding Russian writer, thinker and historian of literature. The collection includes her "narches", essays and notebooks of the war years, which became the most fruitful period of its literary activities. Most of the works collected here are published for the first time, including a story about blockade death, almost seventy years remaining unknown even the closest to the author of people, an early version of blockade of man"s notes, reflections on Soviet literature, an article about the self-consciousness of the Russian intellectual of Jewish origin in the conditions of an increasing anti-Semitic campaign and much more. There is no doubt if the prose of Ginzburg would become the property of the reader when it was written, our ideas about the history of Russian literature of the second half of the 20th century would be radically different
