On a cloudy day, the Neva River water takes on the color of the reflecting clouds, earthy and steely. But when a sunny day comes, the sky is all around blue, and the Neva is a deep blue. If you take a walk on a sunny day, you will surely admire this divine blue. This is a writer's corner in general. Maybe even the whole city is a writer's city. At least its central, historical part. The best representatives of Russian literature were either born or lived and worked in St. Petersburg. Pushkin, Zhukovsky, Baratynsky, Dostoevsky, Kuprin, Bunin, Akhmatova, Mandelstam, Brodsky, and many, many others.
So, perhaps I will tell my story while walking through the literary part of Liteyny Avenue, street after street, house after house. Parading through Liteyny Avenue. Nowadays, they would say aimlessly wandering, idly strolling, or just walking. In the times of the empire, they paraded. Now there is no Empire, now they wander idly, no longer parade. That's also why I don't take anyone on my walks. I am always alone, with only St. Petersburg and its inhabitants with me, especially those who have long departed to another world.
'Part II, Liteyny'. Mohovaya. Khamovaya. Khamovniki. A bygone era. Faded photographs. Forgotten names. Worn-out destinies. A cooper, a gatekeeper, a tanner, a potter, a cooper. You probably didn't immediately realize what crafts I am talking about. Russia fading away. Perhaps even already gone. Forever. Like dead.
I am grateful to fate for living in this city, in its historical center. I did not become happy in St. Petersburg, but without this city, I would be unhappy. To be unhappy and to be miserable are not the same thing, they are different degrees of depression.
