In the development of set theory, on which all modern mathematics is based, paradoxes arose. For example, the barber paradox is formulated as follows: Does the barber shave himself if he shaves only those who do not shave themselves? The brochure explains how set theory deals with such situations, as well as other paradoxes, including those that arise when considering the axiom of choice. In particular, you will learn how to make two oranges out of one. Appendix 3 contains problems, the independent solution of which will help the reader to better understand the material of the brochure. The text of the brochure consists of processed records of lectures given by the author on April 8, 2000, at the Small Mechmath for students in grades 9-11 (recorded by E.N. Osmova) and in July 2001 as part of the summer school "Modern Mathematics" for students in grades 10-11 and 1-2 year students (recorded by Yu.L. Pritykina). The brochure is intended for a wide range of readers interested in mathematics: high school students, junior college students, and teachers.
