Fyodor Ivanovich Shalyapin (1873–1938) was an opera and chamber singer, a soloist of the Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatres. He is one of the most famous opera performers in the history of Russia. Shalyapin had a significant influence on the world of opera. In his autobiographical book "Pages from My Life," Shalyapin candidly recounts his difficult childhood, spent in poverty and amidst alcoholism, his introduction to music that deeply moved him, his first steps on stage, the ensuing success, impressions from international trips, encounters with prominent figures in culture, and the attainment of worldwide fame. Along the way, he reflects on opera artistry, inspiration, performance mastery, and the social changes that occurred during his lifetime.
