Nikolai Alexandrovich Leykin was a well-known St. Petersburg writer, humorist, journalist, and publisher in his time. His popularity was enormous: at the end of the 19th century, the poet A. Blok referred to it as the "era of Alexander III and the writer Leykin." Leykin began publishing in the 1860s, drawing attention with sketches from merchant life. By the early 1870s, he became a regular contributor to the "Petersburg Newspaper," where he wrote small stories and scenes almost daily. Starting in 1882, Leykin published his own journal - the humorous weekly "Oskolki," which attracted the young Anton Chekhov to collaborate, revealing his talent (Chekhov later referred to Leykin as his "godfather" in literature). The book "Our People Abroad" is one of Leykin's most famous works, with 24 editions published during the author's lifetime alone! It is a cheerful narrative about the trip of the merchant Nikolai Ivanovich Ivanov and his wife Glafira Semenovna to France - to the famous World Exhibition in Paris, for which the Eiffel Tower was built. Along the way, the characters encounter amusing adventures and various misunderstandings. Leykin's gentle humor towards compatriots who set out to see the world and show themselves remains relevant even today.
