The book is devoted to the scientific contribution, state and social activities, as well as the development of the ideas of an outstanding scientist, the Hero of the Soviet Union academician O. Y. SMIDTA. As a famous mathematician algebraist and one of the creators of the theory of groups, O. Y. SMIDT was also a major geophysicist and effectively used mathematical methods in solving theoretical and applied tasks. He made an invaluable contribution to the study and development of the Arctic, put on the current basis of the complex of earth sciences, laid the foundation of the planetary cosmogony in relationship with geophysics. The book also shows an outstanding scientific and organizational and educational activity of O. Yu.Smidt, his role in book publishing and creating a large Soviet encyclopedia. The collection contains scientific articles of his students and followers - the staff of the institute of RAS and other related institutions created by him and bearing his name, as well as memories of O.
