What is patriotism: emotion or ideology? If this feeling, then what is its basis: love or hatred, pride or shame? If ideology, then what is it - conservative or revolutionary, to the support of whom or what is it oriented: power, nations, class, state or society? In his book, Vladislav Aksenov, on the vast material of the XIX - early XX centuries, analyzes ideological discussions and emotional registers of different social groups that unleashed the "war of patriotisms" in attempts to appropriate the Fatherland. In this war, aggressive patriotic propaganda constructed images of external and internal enemies and subjugated the policy of emotions, as a result of which such abstract categories as "national honor and dignity" became factors of international relations and pushed the countries to a world war. The author shows all the inconsistency of this historical phenomenon, the cyclicality of patriotic debates and the crises to which they lead. Vladislav Aksenov is a doctor of historical sciences, senior researcher at the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, author of many works on the history of Russia of the turn of the XIX -XX centuries
