A lot has been written about the Parisians - sophisticated ladies, causing universal admiration. The authors of this book set off in search of twenty such women to create a thin, insightful and very realistic portrait of modern Parisians, and at the same time exciting an unusual tour of the French capital.
All these women of different ages are engaged in cinema and restaurant business, own bookstores, understand politics and antiques, live in various conditions. They will reveal the doors of their houses to you and share thoughts about life, stories and addresses of their favorite and interesting places.
Each of these portraits, written by the most convinced feminist of all Parisian journalists Laurent Bastid, was illustrated by photographs of Jeanne Damas, a "new Parisian", as she was christened by the press. And the authors of the book themselves will share with readers their secrets and love for the French capital.
From the author
We went, with a notebook under the arm and camera Olympus on a belt, to meet the Parisians. We chose them intuitively, without calculation. Sometimes we accidentally stumbled upon them on Instagram, sometimes they struck us at first sight when we noticed them with a glass of wine at the rack of some bar. We consulted with friends of friends, mothers of friends, grandmothers of friends and other women who delight us.
We did not seek to create an exhaustive selection - we are not anthropologists and not sociologists. These women belong to the world of fashion, media, culture and art. These are only our Parisians - "ours", with whom our paths intersected in the nine months of our study.
At the meetings, we were expected both the obvious and surprises. Such conversations helped us understand what exactly the main feature of the Parisians consists in. Our heroines destroyed part of the stereotypes and reinforced many intuitive guesses. They live on a river barge, in a bag for servants, on the 14th floor of a high-altitude tower or in the depths of the green courtyard. They are from all over the world, of all social layers and environments, of all cultures. But something unites them: the courage to be yourself. We have chosen these women because they have a "something like that", according to Jeanne"s favorite expression. And it, if you think about it, can become the very "highlight" that distinguishes Parisians. All of them allowed us to look into their lives, go through their quarter. They proved to us that Parisian women make up a whole with their city. Having completed the walk, we realized that with them we created a portrait of Paris himself. But what is there to be surprised? The only true Parisian is just the capital itself.
