In 1803 N.M. Karamzin, by that time the famous writer and journalist, was appointed by decree of Alexander I as a historiographer. From that time until the end of his life, having left literary activity, Karamzin was busy writing his main work - “History of the Russian State”. He was the first to open the domestic story for a wide range of readers. A.S. Pushkin wrote: “The appearance of this book (it was supposed to be) made a lot of noise and made a strong impression, 3,000 copies diverged in one month (which Karamzin himself did not expect) is the only example in our land. Everyone, even secular women, rushed to read the history of their Fatherland, until the unknown to them. She was a new discovery for them.
