Bestuzhev courses are a unique phenomenon of Russian public life of the last quarter of the 19th - early XX centuries. They were organized so that women could receive higher education, and exist as a non -state university for private donations. Dmitry Mendeleev, Alexander Butlerov and other Russian stars of world science taught here. Training programs, equipping laboratories and classes (there were even their own observatory and scientific library in the courses) - corresponded to the level of world universities.
