Osamu Dazai (1909-1948) is one of the greatest figures in 20th-century Japanese literature, a century of global upheavals, the breakdown of traditional ways of life, rapid changes in human living conditions and their quality. Particularly significant changes occurred in Japan, which in a relatively short period of time transformed from a feudal country into one of the most developed countries in the world. Naturally, the collapse of centuries-old traditions resulted in significant human sacrifices. The human psyche simply could not adapt quickly enough to the rapidly changing life circumstances. That is why there are so many tragic figures in 20th-century Japanese literature. And perhaps one of the most tragic is Osamu Dazai. It is difficult to classify his work into a specific literary direction. Many call him a classic of the "I-novel" (watakushi-shōsetsu), while others speak of his proximity to romanticism. However, with both undoubtedly present in his work, it is difficult to confine Dazai Osamu's prose within the narrow confines of one genre. The writer lived a short life (he passed away at the age of forty), but left behind a rich literary legacy. He wrote around 140 short stories, several novellas, and numerous essays on various topics. This volume includes some of his most famous works.
