This issue of 'Origins' contains several sections. The first one includes a provocative pamphlet by Thomas Carlyle, who introduced the famous epithet 'dismal science' in reference to political economy in the context of justifying slavery in the American colonies. John Stuart Mill strongly 'responds' to him in the pages of the book. Articles dedicated to discussing this topic by contemporary economists J. Persky, P. Grunevegen, N.A. Makasheva, and R.I. Kapelyushnikov are presented.
The second section features materials from a Round Table on contemporary macroeconomics issues and a fundamental report by academician R.M. Entov. Articles by N. Rozinskaya, D. Dira, and M. Siotani on the external economic relations of the Russian Empire at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries with Eastern countries are presented, as well as an article by Bulgarian colleagues N. Nenovsky and P. Penchev on the activities of Russian economists-emigrants S. Demostenov and N. Dolinsky in Bulgaria, which have remained unknown until now. An article by L.S. Grebnev is dedicated to the history of Soviet economy, combining the author's personal memories as a member of the State Planning Committee in the 1970s-1980s with his reflections on the structure of this organization, relationships with other governing bodies, and functions in the country's economic system. E.G. Yasin shares his thoughts on the reflections prompted by Grebnev's analysis of the State Planning Committee's experience in modern times. An original analysis of the theory and practice of the monetary system functioning under real socialism in the USSR is presented in Y.B. Kochevrin's article.
The issue concludes with previously unpublished memoirs about Leonid Vitalievich Kantorovich.
For students and teachers of economic universities, researchers, and anyone interested in the history of economic thought and national economy.
