At the base of the salon painting is the so-called academic manner: the perfection of the drawing, the elegance of the lines, a thin study of color, thorough detail, "sublime" and understandable plot, and the main thing is a rules system that prescribes a certain approach to the image of a particular object or group of objects. Addiction to the sublime brought academicists with romantics, following the rules - with classicists, loyalty to nature - with realists, interest in detail - with naturalists. The spectacular composition of the picture, the virtuosity of the brush, the desire to express the ideal, willingness to serve the beautiful - this is the main quality of salon painting.
Orientalism is difficult to separate from romanticism, although not all romance artists were fascinated by travel to the East. For romantic artists, everything else (other cultural world, another art language) turned into a symbol of the best, beautiful, and most importantly - the natural world
