All the crimes of the Third Reich are in one way or another connected to the security forces (SS). This ominous organization controlled practically all aspects of life in Nazi Germany. From a group of bodyguards in black SS uniforms, the SS grew into a powerful organization, with a full-fledged army at its disposal - the SS troops.
German historian and chief editor of the magazine "Spiegel" Heinz Hene (1926-2010) witnessed the emergence and growth of the SS in Germany. Despite his service in the German army during World War II, Hene was an opponent of National Socialism and the SS.
In his book about the SS, first published in Germany in 1966, Hene tells the story of the security forces from their creation in 1923 until their complete collapse in 1945, focusing on the SS's involvement in crimes and the organization of concentration camps, the influence of the SS leadership on Germany's internal and external policies, the role of the SS in the occupation regime, and the destruction of Jews.
