His famous work "History of Great Travels", consisting of three books: "Opening of the Earth", "Mariners of the XVIII century" and "travelers of the XIX century", the famous French writer Jules Verne (1828-1905) wrote for sixteen years. It brightly and entertainingly describes the most significant trips, discoveries, changing the idea of people about the geography of the world, who stylishly white spots on maps that promised wealth and became the causes of wars. The author covered the period from ancient times to the 40s of the XIX century.
The Book of the Opening of the Earth is devoted to the history of great geographical discoveries from the VI century BC to the end of the 17th century. Jules Verne talks about the travelers of ancient Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages and the era of great travels to master the new lands. The travels of Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, America Vespucci, Magellan, Cabot, Barents, Buffin, Hudson and other discoverers are especially described in detail.
The publication is accompanied by 148 illustrations of famous French artists, facsimile of ancient engravings and cards. Among them, for the first time in Russia, a full set of 65 drawings made by L. Bene and P. Filippote is published
