The author of these fascinating memoirs, written based on brief diary entries and letters from the front written by his mother, is Andrey Vladimirovich Nikolaev (1922-2013) - an outstanding Soviet and Russian artist-illustrator. Over his long creative life, he created series of illustrations for approximately two hundred books of Russian and foreign classics, as well as contemporary authors. Widely known to a broad circle of readers as the author of illustrations for Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace," Alexander Pushkin's "The Queen of Spades," Mikhail Bulgakov's "The White Guard," and "The Master and Margarita." Andrey V. Nikolaev began his life's journey like many boys of his generation: a graduation ball at the end of the tenth grade, and on the morning of June 22, 1941 - the announcement of the beginning of the war. He served in the mortar unit of the Veliky Ustyug Infantry School, in a mortar regiment on the Volkhov and Karelian fronts, and at the end of the war - participated in the liberation of Hungary and Austria. The book is illustrated with drawings and diagrams created by the author.
