The early history of the Ukrainian Cossacks is still full of black spots and myths, which is ascertained by many historians. In this work, an attempt is made to eliminate some of them, for which the author analyzes in detail a significant amount of various sources of the late XV-XVI centuries. The application first publishes a Russian translation of notes by Bernard Previch, who, as a Barsky headman in 1540-1552. He became famous for his successful struggle with the Tatar raids, and an excerpt from the notes on the adventures on Zaporozhye Samuel Zborovsky - one of the first Cossack hetmans
