The readers are presented with the memoirs of a Russian naval officer, Lieutenant Andrey Petrovich Shter (1878–1907), who served on the legendary cruiser "Novik" during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. The author sequentially describes all the combat operations of the ship. The concluding chapter of the memoirs tells the story of the brave 600-kilometer journey of the "Novik" crew through impassable swamps and forests of Sakhalin. It is interesting to note that Andrey Petrovich Shter, who survived the war with the Japanese, died in 1907 during revolutionary unrest in Vladivostok.
