Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848–1907) was a French writer with Dutch roots. He started as a follower of the naturalistic school, but in 1884 he published the novel "Against Nature" - a work that became a manifesto of European decadence.
The central figure of the novel is the Duke des Esseintes, who is highly sensitive and deeply repulsed by his contemporary life. He is wealthy and can afford to distance himself from the unattractive reality, indulging in any whim and pleasure, even creating his own world by his own rules... But can one survive and keep their sanity in this most refined of spaces?
