At the present publication included Essay of Joseph Brodsky, selected by the author himself. For the first time, this collection was published in New York in 1995 and became the last one from the press, which a great poet, translator, was destined to see the playwright. In Russia, the collection fully published only once in the early 2000s and therefore can be considered a bibliographic rarity. Most essays were written by Brodsky in English and only a few - in Russian. Some of the translations were fulfilled during the life of the author and with its direct participation. It includes historical and philosophical excursors, autobiographical stories, poetic dissembly of poems of Russian and foreign classics, as well as speech read by Brodsky in the Swedish Royal Academy when receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1987
