Can a truly faithful person reject humility and fight evil with force and sword? Is the death penalty permissible as an extreme means of resisting evil, and is physical restraint an act of violence? The work of the philosopher Ivan Ilyin, "On Resisting Evil by Force," was written in 1925 in emigration as a response to the religious-ethical teachings of Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoyans viewed Christianity as a doctrine of forgiveness, non-resistance to evil by force, and refusal to harbor enmity towards any people. The author denies the idea of non-resistance to evil and believes that not all force is evil, and not every use of force is wickedness. To submit and offer the other cheek means to adapt and conform to evil, to become a part of it. Whereas stopping wrongdoing by force, deviating from one's own moral principles and beliefs, is a spiritual compromise of a person in the name of fulfilling God's will.
