Andrei Timofeevich Bolotov is one of the first Russian scientists -encyclopedists, his main work is the famous "notes", the language, heroes and images of which are still perceived by the reader without difficulty, but historical realities require clarification. Their decryption at the end of the 19th century was engaged in Ekaterina Nikolaevna Shchepkina (1854-1938)-a modest St. Petersburg historian-research historian and a magnificent popularizer of historical science. Taking advantage of the small instructions of Bolotov himself, she picked up various kinds of historical documents according to archives, most often inaccessible to him, or even completely unfamiliar, with whom she complemented the story of Andrei Timofeevich, and at the same time she retelling and commented on the extensive text of the "Notes".
