If about the monuments of archeology, architectural and monumental art of the old Ladoga - one of the oldest cities of Northern Russia - a lot of books and articles are written, it cannot be said about his urban-planning history. Here she traced for the first time since the XII century, when the stone fortress and eight stone temples were built, and up to the last century. The book shows that many of the features of the city planning structure that have developed in the Middle Ages have been preserved until recently. It is not only planning, but also a picturesque combination of open coastal spaces with majestic hills - the pre-Christian funeral mounds, as well as with the ensembles of the fortress, two monasteries and churches of St. John the Forerunner on the left bank of the Volkhov and St. Vasily Kesarian - on the right.
The appendix first publishes a complete summary of all the objects of cultural heritage of the old Ladoga, grouped in the territories, its historical and city planning plan on which the basic values are applied to be protected, research on the history of the fortress with the variants of its graphic reconstructions and numerous documents of the XVI- XVII centuries, among which the main place is occupied by detailed descriptions of stone and earthy fortresses, as well as the most interesting case about their fix in the middle of the XVII century.
The book is illustrated by numerous photographs of the late XIX - early XX centuries, panoramas of old lady on watercolors of 1809 and on the picturesque web of 1833. The publication also contains the first plan of the city, compiled in 1706, with deciphering numerous inscriptions. These images help readers to present in full understanding one of the most magnificent historical landscapes of Russia, which at one time led to the delight of Nikolai Roerich, but was largely distorted at the end of the XX-early XXI century.
The publication is addressed to historians, architects, local arts, teachers of schools, students, as well as all who are interested in and studying the cultural heritage of our country
