The name A. A. Potekhin (1829–1908) is now only familiar to a narrow circle of experts in Russian classical literature. However, before the revolution, he was one of the most famous writers in Russia. In 1900, he was elected an honorary academician of the Academy of Sciences in the field of fine literature, alongside L. N. Tolstoy, A. P. Chekhov, V. G. Korolenko, and I. A. Bunin.
The peasant world, the world of the clergy, is depicted in Potekhin's works in vivid, tangible images. With simple yet highly artistic language, he brings to life people, their daily lives, thoughts, and hopes. His characters are diverse: refined personalities and diligent hosts, tireless workers and seekers of easy gain.
Their bright, distinctive images can evoke admiration, surprise, and often a condescending smile. But they all make the reader empathize with them, prompting reflection on one's own life.
