Alexander Yablonsky is a Russian writer, professional musician, who has been living in Boston since 1996. He is the author of the book 'Dreams', the novel 'Abrasha' (long-listed for the NOS Prize in 2011), the dystopia 'President of Moskovia', the novel 'Leninburg', which is part of the two-volume collection of selected prose 'Worn-out Bathrobe' (1917), as well as short stories, essays, and scientific articles. 'Ode to Joy' is possibly the author's best book. Like a detective story, it intrigues with unpredictability, dynamics, and interweaving of narrative lines, the fates of historical and 'collective' heroes, author's remarks and historical excursions, lyrical plots, and the grim realities of the Great War. The author delves into the 'thick swirling fog' of recent history, trying to make sense of it, finding analogies and cause-and-effect relationships with the murky present and unpredictable future, seeking to determine the place of a person in the mix of 'war and peace'. Whether the author succeeds in creating a coherent organic canvas in this way, perhaps, this is the main intrigue of the book.
