The history of the creation of Soviet nuclear weapons remains one of the most dramatic and mysterious plots of the 20th century. Despite the fact that almost 75 years have passed since August 29, 1949, when the first atomic bomb was tested at the Semipalatinsk test site, many details of the invisible duel between the 'father' of the Soviet atomic bomb Igor Vasilyevich Kurchatov and his American colleague Robert Oppenheimer remain unknown.
This book is unusual for two reasons. Firstly, scientists who were directly involved in the creation of domestic nuclear weapons during the Great Patriotic War and after its end tell the story. Secondly, they are extremely candid because their interlocutor is a person who has devoted more than half a century of his life to studying the history of the 'Soviet Atomic Project,' and therefore many pages of this history are known to him better than to the scientists themselves - after all, secrecy ruled over the fates of all.
