Victor Marie Hugo (1802–1885) was a French writer, poet, playwright, and one of the most important representatives of French Romanticism. "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" (1831) is the first historical novel in French, written by Hugo during a period when the cathedral itself was in complete disrepair and the authorities of Paris were deciding its fate: whether to demolish the monument of medieval architecture or rebuild it. The publication of the novel and its overwhelming success allowed the cathedral to be preserved in its original form and begin the reconstruction of the building. The story unfolds in the 15th century. A young gypsy girl stole a little girl named Esmeralda, leaving a hideous baby in her place, whom the girl abandoned at the cathedral gates. Quasimodo, as the foundling was named, was taken in by a priest, while Esmeralda grew up with the gypsies. Sixteen years later, the paths of the characters cross, but it does not bring them happiness. Hugo's novel is about great emotions: love and jealousy, hope and despair, betrayal and loyalty, all set against the backdrop of the eternally beautiful Paris, which he shares with his characters.
