"Notes on St. Petersburg" is a polyphonic biography of Elena Ignatova's native city, a Russian poet and screenwriter. The history of the former capital of Russia is presented in a two-part narrative: the first book tells the story of the imperial, classical St. Petersburg from its foundation to the fateful changes that befell the city during the Revolution and the Civil War, while the second describes the historical drama that unfolded in Leningrad in the 1920s and 1930s during the long and terrifying Bolshevik experiment. The heightened sensitivity of the author's soul did not allow her to present a purely objective, culturally and historically informed narrative. Elena Ignatova bravely included herself and her relatives in her book, and in recounting distant events, she relied on the memories, letters, and diaries of their participants and eyewitnesses. From authentic and deeply experienced testimonies, a highly personal and therefore invaluable account of life in the majestic, intimidating, happy, and unbearably tragic city has emerged.
