Sad and funny domestic scenes of court life. High society anecdotes (sometimes very poisonous). Pictures of nature. Philosophical reflections. Transparent, crystalline language. Sharp and sarcastic narrator's wit. Extraordinary observability...
"Notes at the Headboard", recognized during the author's lifetime as an unconditional masterpiece and becoming a kind of "bestseller" (of course, in a very narrow court circle, but there was no other in Heian-era Japan - not only the people were illiterate, but also the emerging samurai nobility), laid the foundation for the unique literary genre "zuihitsu", more or less successfully translated as "essay", but not exactly an essay.
In reality, "zuihitsu" is simply unbounded records about everything and nothing. "Pure art" in a distilled form, "beauty for the sake of beauty", not trying to escape through the twists and turns of the plot and valued for what it actually is - the absolute perfection of style, which prose of Sei Shonagon stands out even against the richest array of talented stylists of medieval Japanese literature.
