For the first time in Russian, previously unpublished Notes of Admiral P. V. Chichagov are being released. They cover the "beautiful beginning of the days of the Alexandrovskys", when the admiral headed the naval department until his departure to France in 1808, and the events of 1812, of which he was a witness and active participant. New facts about that time are revealed, giving an idea of the relationships between high-ranking officials, the author's attitude towards them, and various events in Russian history. The admiral turned out to be the only person from the top echelon of Russian military leaders who left his memoirs of that time and provided his own interpretation of the situation during the downfall of Napoleon's invasion. Diary entries of P. V. Chichagov describing his departure from St. Petersburg to Great Britain, as well as letters from the admiral and to him from various correspondents - N. P. Rumyantsev, M. I. Kutuzov, A. I. Chernyshev, R. Wilson, S. R. Vorontsov - serve as supplements.
