Svetlana Pletneva's book is dedicated to the nomadic peoples who lived in the southern Russian steppes for almost a thousand years, starting from the invasion of the Huns in the 4th century and until the arrival of the Mongols in the 13th century. Based mainly on archaeological material and writings of early medieval writers, she narrates about the migrations of steppe dwellers, their way of life, beliefs, customs, and rituals, their interactions with sedentary peoples, and the traces they left on the current territory of southern Russia and Ukraine. Through examples of items found by archaeologists in the burials of nomads, Svetlana Pletneva shows how the Hunnic era, which gave rise to many steppe hordes, was replaced by the Khazar era, how the Khazars were succeeded by the Pechenegs and Turkic tribes, who in turn yielded the steppe spaces to the Kipchaks, who were later crushed and absorbed by the Mongol invasion. Svetlana Pletneva is a Doctor of Historical Sciences, a professor, and an outstanding specialist in the field of archaeology, history, and culture of the nomads of the Middle Ages.
