Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863-1938) was a poet, writer, and playwright. A modernist, an icon of decadence, a hero of World War I, a destroyer of social norms, a classic of Italian literature, and one of the most prominent figures of the brilliant and tumultuous era at the turn of the century, he had a huge influence on his contemporaries, both those who adored him and those who categorically rejected him. Debates about his work and personality still generate lively interest among readers. In the midst of World War I, on January 16, 1916, an Italian military seaplane made an emergency landing in the waters off the Adriatic coast. Gabriele D'Annunzio, who was part of the crew, suffered a concussion that threatened him with total loss of vision. To avoid losing his sight, he had to spend about three months, as prescribed by doctors, lying in complete darkness with minimal movement. Pain, insomnia, hallucinations, memories of childhood and youth, and the ghosts of fallen comrades relentlessly haunted the poet in the twilight for endlessly long weeks. Determined not to go insane, he blindly - line by line - made notes on small strips of paper, recording events, thoughts, and feelings. These fragmentary sketches, along with earlier notes, formed the basis of an extraordinary book that the author titled "Notturno" and considered the best of his prose works. "So the word written by me in the darkness loses its shape and meaning. It is music." Notturno, however, can be translated not only as a nocturne but also as an all-night vigil or something related to the darkest, most mysterious, and frightening time of day. Immersion into the night.
