Vasily Aksenov wrote the novel "New Sweet Style" in 1996. The hero of the novel is a talented theater director, actor, and bard Alexander Korbakh, who is forced to emigrate to America. There, he becomes a university professor, finds a wealthy relative, falls in love with an archaeologist girl, and works in Hollywood. He longs for Russia, repeatedly returns to Moscow of the 1990s, and lives "between two countries." The brilliant verbal play decorates the characters' speech in the novel, and the poetic fragments at the end of each chapter elevate the narrative to philosophical generalization. This is a book about Russia and America, about the intertwining of human destinies. About freedom, which Aksenov writes about: "...it is a winged creature, it is a new sweet style!" And of course - about love. In the whirlwind of this stunning revelation, or - dare we assume - in a sharp attack of neurosis, he did not notice how he turned from a glittering triangle of commercial temptations into one of the moderately lit side streets... Suddenly, a perspective opened up, in the center of which, on the dark sky, his own name stood before him in huge burning letters: Alexander Korbakh. Well, that's it. My time has come.
