The ancient city of Nerekhta is located on the southwest outskirts of the Kostroma region, in the middle of the path between Kostroma and Yaroslavl.
About the early periods of his history of information was not preserved, but he was probably long before the first mention on the pages of the chronicle.
For a long time, it was believed that the name of the city in the language of the Finno-Ugric tribe of the measure means "river in low, swampy terrain". Indeed, the Nerekhta River that flows through the city carries its waters in the lowland, but there is no swamp on her shores. Most recently, Candidate of Philological Sciences V.V.Koffka proposed another, as it seems more plausible, interpretation of the city name. In his opinion, the word "Nerekhta" consists of two merry words: "Nere" - the name of the Goltz fish from the Karpov family and the "Htta" is a place of spawning. Thus, standing on the shore of the same name River, Nerekhta got its name from the spawning site of Golts, which is still universally found in the Kostroma rivers
