The hero of this novel is “Hero of our time”, a person who has passed the harsh school of life, after prolonged wandering returns home and is one on one with a harsh and unpredictable reality, in a new country, so unlike that former. What is his homeland now? The writer answers this question, showing today"s Russia without embellishment, in which natural selection occurs, alas, not always according to Darwin, because very often not the strongest, but the meanest.
On the example of many destinies, the threads of which are unexpectedly and bizarre in the novel, the author gives a cut of society at the junction of times, in the era of reforms and shocks. The writer shows a person’s struggle for faith, draws a wide historical canvas, in which two forces are faced with: clans, by hook or untruthful of power, and respectable people who seek to find their own path in this life, without transgressing the laws of good and justice
