The purpose of the expedition was to consolidate Russia, which after the defeat in the Crimean war in the Black Sea, in the recently acquired Amur Territory, was studying the study of Primorye. The crown of the trip was a stay in Japan with the squadron of Count N. N. Muravyov-Amursky, who recently entered into an agreement on the borders with China and who arrived to resolve the Sakhalin issue that has recently been profitable for Russia
