The attention of readers is offered the classical work of the outstanding Soviet biologist, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences I.I. Shmalgauzen, who has become a valuable contribution to the development of domestic and world evolutionary teachings.
The book consists of five parts. The first part of the book is devoted to the phenomena of mutation and modification variability as the basis of evolutionary processes. The second part contains an analysis of the driving forces of evolution at the level of the population and species. The mechanisms of converting the genetic composition of populations are considered. The main attention is drawn to evidence of the existence of a stabilizing form of natural selection. The conditions for the accumulation of the reserve of hereditary variability within the population, its composition and role in the process of converting populations are shown. In the third part, elementary processes of changes in the body in its historical development are understood. In the fourth part, previously additionally included in the second edition of the book, the integration of biological systems and their regulation are considered. In the fifth - the question of the pace of evolution and the factors that determine these pace at its various stages are set out.
