The series of essays 'Mythologies' represents a brilliant analysis of mass culture as a system of signs. The author semiotically explains the mechanism of the emergence of political myths as the transformation of history into ideology under the condition of signifying this process. In the concluding part of the work - the article 'Myth Today' - an explanation and a method of resistance to modern mythologizing are proposed - the creation of a new artificial myth, the construction of a conditional, third level of mythology, if the first is understood as archaic-traditional, and the second as 'new' (like a scientific class, for example, Soviet).
In Roland Barthes' research, the key definition of a myth is the word. Everything covered by discourse can become a myth, as 'our world is endlessly suggestive'. According to Barthes, myth is a marking qualitative characteristic of the 'anonymous' contemporary bourgeois society, with mythologization being considered a feature of all societies.
The book is of interest to linguists, philologists, as well as researchers of society and culture.
