The revised and expanded edition of the monograph by Professor of the Herzen Russian State Pedagogical University is dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Nikolaevich Golitsyn (1773–1844). This prominent statesman simultaneously headed the Ministry of Spiritual Affairs and Public Enlightenment, the Main Post Office, the Court Department, often acted as Minister of Internal Affairs and Chairman of the State Council, and was the chairman and trustee of several imperial societies. The prince served under Catherine II, Paul I, Alexander I, and Nicholas I. He was a friend of Alexander I and participated in the upbringing of Alexander II. Golitsyn is known for his original religious views, which were reflected in his policies in the spiritual-religious sphere. Their mutual influence with Alexander I led to an unprecedented religious liberalism prevailing in Russia for a decade. Masonic lodges, religious societies, and sects were actively operating. The most popular preachers in Europe visited the country, and Golitsyn supplied the emperor with "prophets." Although in the 1820s the liberal religious policy was rolled back, the prince's personal circle existed for many more years.
