Knud Hamsun is a recognized classic of Norwegian literature and the Nobel Prize laureate of 1920. Hamsun gained worldwide fame with his novel "Hunger" (1890), which impressed readers with its innovative style and bold narrative. The novel "Mysteries" was created after "Hunger" and was intended by the writer to revolutionize Norwegian literature. The plot is very characteristic of Hamsun's prose: an extraordinary young man arrives in a small town with an old bourgeois way of life, whose attitude towards life and love is far from conventional morality. "Mysteries" was a tremendous success and influenced many 20th-century writers, including Henry Miller, who wrote: "There are few books in the world to which I can constantly return, and one of them is Hamsun's 'Mysteries'..." The novel was translated into Russian by Liliana Lungina.
