"Hope" is the fifth book of the grand autobiographical cycle "My Struggle" by Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgaard. It describes the author's university period of life.
Nineteen-year-old Knausgaard is the youngest student at the Academy of Creative Writing in Bergen. It seems like the whole world belongs to the lucky one: ahead of him are love, friendship, student gatherings, creativity, and fame. However, the endless series of Bergen rains quickly washes away the enthusiastic expectations: what comes out from under his pen looks immature and derivative compared to the texts of his classmates, teachers see him as a capable critic, but do not believe in his writing talent, he gets lost and remains silent in gatherings, and the most insidious trap, as usual, is set by love. This is a book about youth, the difficulties of growing up, love, friendship, about one's own destiny, and of course, the heavy work of a writer.
