The author of these bestselling memoirs about the Holocaust, Nanette Blitz Konig (b. 1929), was a school friend of Anne Frank, whose famous diary is a symbol of the tragedy of the Jewish people during World War II. Bergen-Belsen did not have gas chambers, but between 1943 and 1945, around 50 thousand prisoners died there, with over 35 thousand of them succumbing to typhus shortly before liberation. Among the deceased were Anne Frank, her sister Margot, and Nanette's entire family. Nanette, who weighed only 32 kilograms, miraculously managed to survive.
