Kemal Atatürk is the most famous Turkish politician in the world. Winston Churchill called Mustafa Kemal a "man of destiny". It was he who created modern Turkey. Kemal was an outstanding commander. His name is primarily associated with the Turkish victory in the battle for the Dardanelles. Kemal Pasha was one of the few Turkish commanders who successfully fought against all of Turkey's opponents in World War I - against the English and French on the Gallipoli Peninsula, in Palestine and Syria, against the Russians in the Caucasus. His military career knew notable rises, usually when Turkey was in a critical situation, but often after a rise, he was pushed to marginal positions, only to rise again later. After Turkey's capitulation, he was one of the few who did not surrender. Kemal brilliantly won the seemingly hopelessly lost war with Greece, ensured the preservation of Turkey's independence, and laid the foundation for the rise that this country has been experiencing in recent decades. He did what seemed impossible - turned the medieval, Asian Ottoman Empire into a modern European Turkey (although geographically the main part of the country remains in Asia). He made the Turks wear hats instead of fezzes, adopt the Latin alphabet instead of Arabic, live by European legal codes, engage in industry and trade. Atatürk liked the hard military life. He was smart and fearless. He was a patriot, wanted to modernize his country and bring European cultural values into it, make it a secular state. But on the way to his goal, he sometimes used Asian means, dealing with his opponents. Also, the European lifestyle that Kemal followed, he adopted with all its excesses, which significantly shortened his life. But in the memory of descendants, he remained thanks to the fact that he built a new Turkey.
