The book presented to readers is devoted to the literary and musical heritage of one of the most authoritative figures of Russian choral art of the first half of the 20th century Alexander Vasilievich Nikolsky (1874-1943) The outstanding spiritual composer of the new direction, a music writer, teacher, public figure Nikolsky belonged to the number of musicians, whose works determined the content of the choral life of pre -revolutionary Russia. The formation and development of choral art and musical folklore of the Soviet era was also connected with his work.
The book first presents the extensive case of handwritten and rare printed materials, covering the biography of Nikolsky and the environment in which his life passed. These are the letters of the composer from the beginning of the 1890s to the beginning of the 1940s, his most substantial historical, theoretical, journalistic and pedagogical works dedicated to church singing, the memories of contemporaries about Nikolsky. All materials are scientifically commented on and meaningful in articles by editors of the publication.
In addition to Nikolsky himself, the "actors" of this book are his contemporaries and associates as S. V. Smolensky, V. S. Orlov, A. D. Kastalsky, S. N. Krutikov, P. D. Samarin, A.A. Arkhangelsky, A. V. Preobrazhensky, D.V. Allemanov, P. G. Chesnokov, A. V. Castorsky, A. A. Ignatiev, D. I. Zarin and a number of other musical musical in the capital"s musical circles of faces. However, the bulk of the book’s personalities are ordinary musicians who lived in various cities and villages of a vast state. The second book of the eighth volume will be devoted to the creative and social movement of the "musical workers in the field of choral singing, which has unfolded in recent decades of the history of the Russian Empire. In it, the voice of Nikolsky will flush into the general choir of regents, singers, composers and teachers of choral singing, who discussed the problems of their craft. In the second book of Tom, protocols, transcripts and reports of six regent congresses, which were held from 1908 to 1917, the corps of articles on church-do"s courses and societies, excerpts from the reports of the Ober-Prosecutors of the Holy Synod and other materials, will be presented.
