Analyzed the definitions of the muscular tone and the methods of its research. The most informative way recognized the study of the muscle reaction to the forced stretching and shortening. A device is described for studying this reaction in a wide range of vestibilities of passive excursions limbs. This method gives the most complete information about the state of the neuromuscular system. The results of the research of healthy people and patients with impaired muscle tone during Parkinsonism, with a cerebellum lesion, with cerebral palsy, with peripheral innervation disorders and in spasticity. The important role of this activity in the functioning of the central nervous system is emphasized.
