This edition includes early works by Ivan Turgenev, in which the most important motifs of his creativity are revealed - destinies, duty, loneliness, the search for happiness, and others. In them, Turgenev's approach to revealing the inner world of characters, which later became known as "secret psychologism," is manifested. "A poet must be a psychologist," Turgenev said, "but a secret one: he must know and feel the roots of phenomena, but only represent the most obvious manifestations - in their bloom or withering." The sense of loneliness and despair distinguishes Turgenev's "superfluous people" - heroes who are unable to find application for their strengths, knowledge, and talent. But the feeling of hopelessness is not only characteristic of individualists and rebels, but also of the common man. For example, in the story "Mumu," written by Turgenev based on real events, Gerasim's personal drama is elevated to the level of a universal tragedy. It is no coincidence that Ivan Aksakov considered the image of Gerasim as "the personification of the Russian people, of its terrible strength and unfathomable gentleness."
