Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) was a Russian and Soviet writer, poet, prose writer, playwright, journalist, and public figure. His novel "Mother," published in 1906, tells the story of Pelageya Nilovna, a widow of a factory locksmith, whose son tries to break free from the oppressive environment. Despite her fears and concerns, she gradually becomes imbued with his revolutionary ideas and joins the struggle for the rights of the working class. The novel is considered a starting point for the genre of "social realism."
