By giving the order to begin mass bombings of Moscow in mid-July 1941, Hitler intended to bring the Soviet Union to its knees by destroying the main administrative, economic, and transportation center of our country. However, his plan faced active resistance from fighter pilots, anti-aircraft gunners, local air defense fighters, and the civilian population of the city. From August to November 1941, a fierce battle unfolded in the skies over Moscow, which ended in failure for the Luftwaffe. The last bombs fell on the capital in April 1942. The new book examines the construction of air defense systems in Moscow during the pre-war and wartime periods, the role of the metro and defensive structures, the evolution of German "operational air warfare" which included raids on Moscow, and describes the course of military operations. For the first time, specialists have gathered and analyzed numerous documents from various archives, historical materials from both sides, and the memories of participants. The publication was prepared as part of the project "Moscow Under Bombs 1941-1943" with the support of the Presidential Grants Fund.
