In the 1960s, while monumental mosaics became common in other Soviet cities and republics, in Moscow mosaics were primarily used for art-deco works and social realist 'pictures'. The entire history of Soviet art is reflected in Moscow's metro stations, palaces of culture, military museums, hospitals, schools, and prefabricated houses. Unfortunately, many of these works are disappearing due to destruction or dismantling, as the majority are not listed for state protection, and many of their authors remain unknown. This book showcases 140 Soviet-era mosaics arranged chronologically into four main sections - Art Deco, Socialist Realism, Modernism, and Postmodernism. It includes a list of 295 identified mosaics. The guide presents well-known works by artists such as Aleksander Deyneka, Pavel Korin, Boris Chernyshev, Evgeny Ablin, Yury Korolev, and Leonid Polishchuk alongside mosaics by artists whose names were previously absent from art and architecture history. The concept for the book originated from American photographer James Hill, who spent three years locating and photographing Soviet monumental art pieces that have been overlooked and often disregarded as propaganda in the post-Soviet era.
