Roman Vasily Alekseevich Lebedev is dedicated to Russia, Russian people in the hardest period of early 18th century. The events of the novel occur in Veliky Ustyug and Moscow. The life of people of different classes, their work, life is designed reliably and very colorfully. The writer draws the most interesting portraits of peasants, Kuznetsov, Streltsov, as well as Tsar Mikhail Romanov, Patriarch Filaret, members of the Boyar Duma, Dyakov and the Stranki orders.
The main characters of the book are the family of Ustyugan Virichyev, Kuznetsov-Cleells, watchmakers of masters, hardworking, talented and inquisitive. It was them that they fell out the most difficult task - to create a grand clock with bells for the fight on Flor (now Spasskaya) of the Kremlin Tower.
